Switches are easy to recognize. A switch is kind of like a big circuit breaker that opens or closes power to an electrical circuit, but it’s not always easy to tell if the switch is on or off just by looking at it. Sometimes you have to use your hand-held device (DETECTOR) like a voltmeter, oscilloscope, wattmeter, time-domain reflectometer (TDR), logic analyzer for this task. When you come across something like an office thermostat where you can’t see the switches and the wires running into the wall socket are confusing, look no further than your trusty old switchesniffer tool! SwitchSniffer v1. 7 is the latest version of my science-based switch detector. This is an easy to use application which indicates the status of the switches with pins 5, 6, 7 and 8 in your computer. You can run SwitchSniffer to check any electrical device in your home, office or car. How you use SwitchSniffer depends on your purpose for using it. 1) The easiest way to use SwitchSniffer is that you turn all four pins to off (see method 2 below). That’s all there is to it! It just takes a second and you’re done. 2) Another way of using SwitchSniffer is that you turn all four pins to on or you open the switch to on. It may not be the best way if you are just trying to determine which pins are being used, but it’s a quick way for checking which switches are open or closed. 3) This is for testing power (running all 4 pins high). This method tests if the device will actually deliver power when using this method. 4) This is for testing power (running all 4 pins low). 5) This is for setting up logic analyzers.
